This evening I watched five hummingbirds dive-bombing each other, vying for a premium spot at the feeders. I had refilled two large glass feeders, and each one had five spots where they could drink to their heart’s content.
But they wouldn’t have it.
Each hummer wanted to be the chief. In the world of hummingbirds there’s just no getting along when it comes to nectar.
This bird had a better idea. I watched him dive and circle, dive and circle. Then he paused for a while on a craggly branch and rested. A few seconds later, he made his way directly to my butterfly bush, where he had the entire bush to himself.
