Memory… is the diary that we all carry about with us. -Oscar Wilde, “The Importance of Being Earnest”
I planted flowers in a new flowerbed today and thought of my mother, whose favorite color was pink. How thankful I am for the gift of memory–how even a single bud unfolding in morning light has the power to replay a precious moment in time.

Faith is the strength by which a shattered world shall emerge into the light. - Helen Keller
This is the first in a new series I’m calling “A Step Closer”. ASC images will transport us below the surface and beyond the usual, where insects roam and plants bud, flower, and decay. It’s a miniature world that sometimes, at second glance, resembles tiny forests with streams or grassy knolls.
In my attempt to capture these hidden scenes, I hope to inspire others to take a closer look at their own backyards or favorite outdoors location. Be sure to take your imagination along. What you discover may surprise you!
